2. Creating Memorable Reactions: Facial Elements
Hey there!
In the previous unit, you made your first Lens using the 2D Objects template.
In this unit, you will build a new Lens that manipulates faces using Face Paint or Distort functions.
By the end of this tutorial, you will be able to ...
- Build a Lens that uses facial manipulations
Materials
- Face Paint Template
- Face Paint Tutorial Video
- Distort Template
- Distort Tutorial Video
- Sample Practice Assets
Estimated Time: 45 minutes
Step 1: Explore
Try out the following Face Paint Lenses:
And these Distort Lenses:
As you can see, Face Paint adds elements to your face as if they were painted on. Distort stretches, shrinks, and multiplies parts of your face to create illusions.
Step 2: Create (Option A)
It’s time to create your own Lens using one of the facial manipulations that we just explored.
For this activity, you will use the Face Paint template to paint a 2D texture onto your face.
1. 👻 Open the Lens Studio software on your computer.
2. 👻 Find and open the “Face Paint” template.
3. 💻 Watch this Face Paint tutorial video below by Lens Creator Roman Jaquez. Follow along the tutorial with these sample assets (optional).
4. 🎨 Develop your own Lens using the Face Paint template.
Stuck for an idea for your Face Paint Lens design?
Lots of designers start with ideas that will appeal to their target audience. Have a go at designing a Lens for a special person you know very well (they will be your target audience).
What do they love? Brainstorm the kinds of things they find interesting / amusing / appealing.
Then, translate one or two of the best ideas into a Face Paint Lens design.
Don’t forget to use our Successful Lens Checklist below to improve your design. Your goal is to be able to answer yes to most of these questions:
1. Does your Lens appeal to a certain audience?
2. Does your Lens have a clear purpose?
3. Is your Lens fun to interact with?
4. Does your Lens provoke a reaction from the user?
5. Is your Lens sharable?
5. 👻 Spend a few more minutes finishing up your Lens and trying it directly on your Snapchat app!
- Actions to consider: stretching, duplicating, liquifying with pre-configured effects or creating your own .psd or .png.
6. 💬 If you have any questions, try these resources below or post your question on Unit #2 Padlet.
7. 💻 Save your progress on your computer.
8. 📤 Save a screenshot of your Lens as a .PNG to upload to the Unit #2 Padlet.
If you’d like, you can also Preview the Lens and save a video copy.
Step 2: Create (Option B)
For this activity, you will use the Distort template to create face distorting effects. Face Paint adds elements to your face as if they were painted on. Distort stretches, shrinks, and multiplies parts of your face to create illusions. The best thing is you can create these Lenses without even having to import anything extra into Lens Studio. Ready? Let’s go!
Suggested workflow:
1. 👻 Open the Lens Studio software on your computer.
2. 👻 Find and open the “Distort” template.
3. 💻 Watch this Distort tutorial video below by Lens Creator Roman Jaquez.
4. 🎨 Develop your own Lens using the Distort template.
Stuck for an idea for your Face Distort Lens design?
Lots of Lens Creators start their designs by creating a character. Think about creating a character for the following stories:
- A mutant creature in a horror film
- An alien in a sci-fi film
- A funny monster in a kids film
If it helps, come up with a short back story for them. Or come up with your own character ideas!
